Antonio Possenti (1933 - 2016)

He was born in Lucca and in this city he has his studio in "Piazza dell'Anfiteatro".

After finishing his classic studies, he soon discovered the expressive qualities of drawing, following an inclination towards tales of fantasy that he maintained, even through a close observation of the "human comedy".

To painting he arrived self taught from drawings and illustrations.

His learning process was ideal and determinating, the fruit of his intellectual curiosity and of the literary and artistic culture that he had absorbed since childhood in his family, moving from Greek and Roman classicism to the modern and contemporary epochs with a particular predisposition for experiences of a more lively and involving fantastic character. He travelled a lot and met various characters and cultures, but always returned to Lucca where he lives and has his studio in the heart of the city; a magic place that holds, like an immense suitcase, the memories of his excursions in the world. During the course of his career he exhibited his work in the main Italian and foreign galleries (Gianferrari, Il Milione, Appiani Arte 32 in Milan, Marescalchi and Forni of Bologna, Davico and Biasutti in Torino, il Targhetto in Venezia, Poggiali and Forconi in Florence, L'immagine in Arezzo, Aminta in Siena, Philippe Guimiot in Brussels, Rutzmoser in Munich, East West Gallery of London, Art Basel of Basilea, F.I.A.C. of Paris, Art Fair, Tuyap in Istambul, Foire d'art of Gent, Arco of Madrid, Stoccolm, St'Art of Strasburg, BART of Barcellona.

He held personal exhibits in prestigious public venues: the Uffizi Museum, Sala d'Armi of the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence, Reggia of Caserta, Tour Fromage of Aosta, Palazzo Ducale of Massa, Castel dell' Ovo of Naples.

He received a number of awards and recognition and his work is represented in important private and public collections in Italy and in other counties.

Critics, art historians, writers and intellectuals have written about him. Among them: Luca Beatrice, Fortunato Bellonzi, Aldo Busi, Dino Buzzati, Oscar Calabrese, Luciano Caprile, Raffaele Carrieri, Piero Chiara, Enrico Cispolti, Massimo Duranti, Giovanni Faccenda, Alfonso Gatto, Paolo Levi, Nicola Micieli, Marilena Pasquali, Roberto Sanesi, Pier Carlo Santini, Giorgio Saviane, Vittorio Sgarbi, Giorgio Soavi, Franco Solmi, Marcello Venturoli.

He is a member of the Academy of Literature, Science and Art of Lucca and of the Art and Drawing Academy of Florence.
